The 2026 Kyoto edition received 431 entries and published winners across AI film, animation, Pocket Anime, synopsis and commercial categories, with selected work advancing toward the Cannes programme.

How selections are made

Organizer-published criteria · WAIFF Kyoto 2026 competition rules

Eligibility

Generally open to individuals, teams and organizations, with category-specific requirements. Finished films must normally have been completed after 1 January 2024, include English subtitles, materially and creatively use at least three generative AI tools including an image tool, provide a production log and comply with the festival's generative-AI and rights policy.

Judging criteria

  • Comprehensiveness of AI use
  • Cinematic expression
  • Readiness for international festival presentation

Selection process

Category juries assess eligible completed works, with finalists and winners published by the organizer and selected entries connected to the wider Road to WAIFF Cannes programme.
